Rustic Meets Fiesta

When Café Bueno relocated to a larger space in historic Downtown Frederick, Maryland, the goal was to create a restaurant that honored both the character of the building and the vibrant spirit of its authentic Mexican cuisine. The design seamlessly blends rustic architectural elements with colorful cultural influences to create a warm, welcoming dining experience.

The transformation began with the building’s exterior, where a neutral color palette was selected to complement the historic architecture while allowing the bold red entrance doors to serve as an inviting focal point. Inside, soft neutral walls create a timeless backdrop that allows the restaurant’s existing artwork, décor, and colorful booths to take center stage.

To celebrate the building’s history, original reclaimed wainscoting was preserved, painted a rich blue, and thoughtfully incorporated throughout the dining areas to define spaces while adding character and authenticity. A new chair rail wraps the interior, visually dividing the walls with complementary paint colors, while distressed finishes on the trim and existing columns reinforce the rustic charm of the space.

The restrooms continue the design story with rustic detailing paired with handcrafted Talavera-inspired accents and stone-look tile that pay homage to Mexico’s rich artistic heritage. Overhead, a traditional tin ceiling introduces another layer of texture and historical character, tying together the old and the new.

The result is a restaurant that feels both authentic and timeless—a space where historic architecture and Mexican-inspired design come together to create an inviting atmosphere as memorable as the dining experience itself.
